Nano Microporous Insulation for Steel Ladles

Nano microporous insulation board for steel ladles

Product Description:

Nano Microporous Insulation for Steel Ladles is a nano microporous thermal insulation material specially designed for steel metallurgical industry, such as ladle. Its thickness is relatively thin, usually 3-10 mm. Vacuum-packaged with an aluminum foil composite film, it can be properly bent and has good compressive strength. Using aluminum foil to wrap can enhance certain strength, and play a dustproof and waterproof role in installation. This product has excellent compressive strength and heat insulation performance, and is convenient and quick to install and construct.

Our nano microporous insulation for steel ladles is rated for continuous service up to 1000 degrees Celsius on the hot face, with peak exposure up to 1200 degrees Celsius during ladle preheating and during molten steel transfer. The microporous matrix maintains its insulating structure through repeated thermal cycling from ambient to ladle operating temperature and back, which is essential for steel ladles that see multiple heats per day. Typical ladle operating temperatures are 1500 to 1650 degrees Celsius for the molten steel itself, but the refractory and insulation layer protect the ladle shell by maintaining a controlled hot-face temperature at the working lining of 1100 degrees Celsius or below. Our insulation sits behind the working refractory and handles the thermal gradient down to the ladle shell, keeping the shell below 350 degrees Celsius for safe handling and reduced heat loss.
Replacing traditional castable refractory with our nano microporous insulation layer behind the working lining typically reduces ladle heat loss by 30 to 50 percent depending on the original lining design. For a 100 ton ladle this translates to energy savings of approximately 30 to 60 kilowatt-hours per heat cycle, or 6 to 12 gigawatt-hours per year for a typical integrated steel mill. The savings come from the much lower thermal conductivity of the microporous layer (0.020 watts per meter kelvin at ambient, 0.028 at 600 degrees Celsius) compared with castable refractory (1.0 to 1.5 watts per meter kelvin). Reduced heat loss also lowers ladle shell temperature, improving worker safety and reducing cooling-water demand. Several of our steel mill customers report payback periods of less than 12 months based on energy savings alone, with additional savings from extended ladle lining life and reduced refractory repair cost.
Installation of our nano microporous insulation in steel ladles follows steel-mill standard practice: the ladle shell is first prepared by removing residual refractory and cleaning the shell surface, then a thin ceramic-fiber expansion layer is applied to accommodate differential thermal expansion, followed by the microporous insulation boards bonded to the shell with high-temperature inorganic adhesive, then the working refractory lining is installed over the insulation. Boards are typically 20 to 50 millimeters thick, depending on shell diameter and target heat-loss reduction. Stainless steel pins are welded to the shell to provide additional mechanical retention of the insulation against vibration and impact during ladle handling. Joints between boards are staggered to avoid through-joint heat bridges. The installation is performed by specialized refractory contractors; we can recommend certified installation partners in major steel-making regions on request.
Service life of our nano microporous insulation in steel ladles is typically 12 to 24 months before requiring replacement, depending on operating conditions. The insulation is protected from direct contact with molten steel by the working refractory, so the insulation itself sees relatively mild conditions compared to the working lining, which may last only 40 to 80 heats. The microporous matrix does not degrade under thermal cycling because it has no organic binders; the structure remains stable as long as the temperature stays within the rated service envelope. The main replacement trigger is mechanical damage during ladle teardown and re-lining operations. To extend service life we recommend a stainless steel mesh overlay on the shell-side of the insulation and careful mechanical handling during refractory replacement. Many of our steel mill customers run the same insulation through 5 or more working lining replacements before re-insulating.
Our microporous insulation is not designed for direct molten-steel contact. In normal operation the working refractory lining protects the insulation from molten steel splash; the insulation sits behind the working lining and never sees direct contact. However, if a breach or crack in the working lining allows molten steel to reach the insulation layer, the result is a localized thermal exposure that the microporous matrix is designed to withstand up to 1200 degrees Celsius peak. Beyond this, the matrix sinters and the insulation must be replaced in that area. To reduce the risk of breach we recommend the standard inspection protocols for working linings between heats, plus visual inspection of the ladle shell temperature as an indirect indicator of working lining condition. Customers using our insulation report no additional breach risk compared with castable refractory back-up layers.
Yes, our nano microporous insulation is widely used on steel ladle lids, tundish covers, and transfer ladle covers. Lid applications typically use 30 to 50 millimeter thick boards bonded to a steel support structure, with a working face of castable refractory or unfaced microporous board. The lid application is less thermally demanding than the ladle barrel because the lid sees only radiant heat from the bath surface, not direct molten-steel contact, so service life is typically longer at 24 to 36 months. Lid insulation reduces ladle heat loss during standby (when the ladle is filled but waiting to pour) by 40 to 60 percent, with corresponding energy savings. We recommend S-glass fabric facing for ladle lid applications because of the mechanical robustness and cleanability of the facing for an exposed surface. Please share your ladle diameter, lid geometry, and operating duty for a complete quotation.

Why Engineers Choose Steel Ladles Microporous Insulation

The steel-ladle-grade nano microporous insulation board is a high temperature insulation panel purpose-engineered as ladle backup behind refractory working linings — reducing ladle heat loss by 30–50 %.

A fumed silica microporous core (optionally paired with a thin ceramic-fiber expansion layer) provides microporous thermal insulation that survives 12–24 months of thermal cycling between ladle turn-arounds.

Steel mills specifying this microporous insulation panel for 150-ton and larger ladles report shell temperature reductions of up to 60 °C — measurable savings on ladle shell cooling water demand and refractory lifetime.
